Google Image Search Tools
Google Images is a great place to look for photos to use on your website. But be careful what you use – many of the results are under copyright, meaning you cannot use them without permission. Some results are also far too small for your intended use and will look blurry if you stretch them out.
Here’s the fix: first type in a keyword like “chemistry” or “library” on images.google.com. Click “Search tools” near the top, and you can filter the results by size, color, and more. A good rule of thumb is to pick “large” under Size, so the images will be large enough for any purpose. Type is helpful if you’re looking just for photos, or just for clip art.
Most important is the Usage Rights filter. Some images are under strict copyright, but others have been labeled by the owners for reuse. You can decide whether you intend to modify the image and filter based on that, and you can search by general or noncommercial reuse. (In almost all cases, a faculty or grad student website is considered noncommercial.)
